How to Become a Paramedic

PUBLIC INFORMATION & EDUCATION

PROGRAMS OFFERED BY THE NEW CASTLE COUNTY PARAMEDICS

Citizen CPR/AED and First Aid Training

Did you know that a majority of cardiac arrests occur in the home?

Looking for CPR training and familiarization with the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED)?  The Emergency Medical Services Division is a designated Community Training Center (CTC) for the American Heart Association.  Our courses are instructed by County paramedics—the same personnel that respond to emergencies within your community.

Courses are available for adult, pediatric and infant CPR and AED modules.  We work with civic associations, church groups, businesses and service groups to deliver courses for their individual organization.

Pre-registration for classes is required.  Course participants are responsible for the cost of the student textbook.  Contact the Emergency Medical Services Division Community Services Detail at 395-8053 or send us an e-mail.

Community EMS Orientation

Are you looking for a program speaker to explain the community emergency medical services system?  Do you have a group of kids that would like to tour an emergency vehicle?  Planning a community event and would like a paramedic unit to visit?

New Castle County EMS can provide speakers and presentations on many aspects of the emergency medical services system.  Call us at 302-395-8053 or e-mail to request a speaker or paramedic unit visit.

Paramedic Assist Program

This program is generally aimed at industrial first responder and basic life support provider groups, including basic life support ambulance crews. Participants are provided an opportunity to become familiar with paramedic equipment and procedures. The presentation emphasizes how the provider can successfully interact with paramedic personnel during an emergency medical response and promotes working as a team. This program is approved for continuing education credits by the Delaware Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Call us at 302-395-8053 or e-mail to request a Paramedic Assist presentation for your group.

Child Safety Seat Education and Installation

Hands-on instruction to educate parents about the correct us of child safety seats is provided. A fitting station is available to the public and free of charge for installation and inspection of a car seat. Appointments are required.

Contact the Emergency Medical Services Division Community Services Detail at 395-8053 or send us an e-mail to schedule an appointment for inspection of your child passenger safety seat.

Vial of Life

Will vital emergency medical information be available in your time of need?

The Vial of Life program is offered to those residents that suffer from medical disease and take medications on a daily basis. A form is provided for the participant to list their medical history, medications taken on a daily basis, and any medication or other significant allergies. Other information can include the family doctor, cardiologist, or other specialist and preferred hospital. The form is placed in a small medication sized container labeled "Vial of Life" and is stored in the refrigerator. A magnetic card is provided to attach to the outside of the refrigerator to indicate that the vial is inside. Although the vial does not require refrigeration, this location was chosen as it is a nearly universal appliance within the home.

Contact the Emergency Medical Services Division at (302) 395-8184 to obtain a Vial of Life kit.

Students Learn About Mortality (SLAM)

SLAM is an injury prevention initiative of the New Castle County Emergency Medical Services Division. The program is powerful and graphic, and uses the perspective of paramedics and law enforcement officers to illustrate the consequences of motor vehicle crashes in our community.  The presentation targets teen age drivers—those drivers at greatest risk for being involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision.

SLAM uses photos of actual crash scenes to illustrate the effects of a motor vehicle collision. Each scene reinforces the final result of aggressive driving, failure to use a seat belt, driving while intoxicated, and careless or inattentive operation of a motor vehicle. Finally, the presentation concludes with a stirring montage of crash scenes, news articles, and the memorials to family, friends and loved ones that can be seen beside the roadways of New Castle County.

Please call (302) 395-8053 to schedule a SLAM presentation.
